OpenID
This is a note to say that I’m happy there is an OpenID standard for web comments.
Used to be you had to sign up at a site to post a comment. And most of the time, since you had no real interest in signing up at a site you likely would never return to, you didn’t actually create the new account. And if you did, it was quickly forgotten.
But now I’m finding most sites accept OpenID. And that’s great because everything gets consolidated and no one feels put out by the thought of dropping a post at a site. More communication. Whee!
Even better, you can add a little avatar or what-have-you to customize your OpenID. Also good, you didn’t even have to create an OpenID account if you already had a Wordpress account. Or LiveJournal. Or TypePad. Or AIM. And others. And Facebook and MySpace have even gotten involved with supporting OpenID, following in the steps of Google, Yahoo!, Microsoft, and more.
Of course, there’s no OpenID “profile” page to connect all the dots. It’d be nice to have the option to show and track all of the comments I’ve or others have made, subscribe to them or responses to them and so forth. I think it would foster communication even more. But I like the ability to respond at will. It’s a start.
