My First Earthquake

Candice and I were up late last night (like usual). I was in the bedroom fiddling with the computer (I bought a new case and I’m trying to get everything out of the old case and into the new case) when the room started shaking. It felt like a train was running nearby or maybe the washer was running and off-balance. Candice came into the bedroom and asked what I was doing. I joked that I was jumping up-and-down and shaking the entire place, but then it all stopped. I didn’t think on it any further until checking my mail and spotting one from Bruce asking if I felt the earthquake. … My first earthquake. Whee!

No shit. OMG I couldn’t believe you were there when it hit. When I was living in California, a hundred years ago, I arrived in time for a 4.8. I was getting ready for school and this Hawaiian guy (suma wrestler type) lived upstairs. All of the sudden the chandelier is swinging and the popcorn ceiling is shedding particles all over the place, pictures were shifting. I thought that SOB was exercising…and then I realized it was an earthquake and headed for the parking lot. You really never quite get over the fear like Californians do. They are used to them and they shrug them off. They think storms, tornados and hurricanes are to be feared!

That was hilarious (the sumo guy thoughts). Seriously. Hahaha. Anyway, I was so… uh… I just didn’t get what was going on. I guess you can say that I was too ignorant to be afraid. If anything, I was annoyed that the computer desk was shaking while I was trying to play a game or whatever it was that I was doing. Haha. And then, after the fact, I was like, oh, cool! An earthquake! (Easy to say, I guess, when there’s no damage.) But then I was disappointed! I was like, oh man! An earthquake! And I didn’t completely explore it! If I could re-live that moment, I’d have had the camera recording video and I’d be running down the street trying to check out the impact. Now I feel like I missed out. Well, if I ever move Callie-forna-way, I guess I’ll get more opportunities. :p I’d still have to say tornadoes are higher on the list of “must see”, though. Which makes me realize I have another “natural disaster” regret: 4 tornadoes touched down in Knoxville while I was there for school. And I missed it because it happened during finals and I was inside taking a test. :p
