Lisa’s 21st
What a fun weekend (ish)! Lots of good tidbits here and there from it, so I figured I’d make a quick write-up to cover the details. (The title of this post is in reference to Candice’s sister, Lisa. She turned 21 this weekend. Congratulations to her.)
Thursday
Our new bed arrived! Candice and I have been using a twin mattress since I moved here in July – though she’d been using it a couple months more than that. After many a night of cramped muscles and no room for pillows and on and on, we finally decided to buy ourselves a brand new bed, a NovaForm® Grande Elegance™ queen mattress.
Here’s the box:

(and, also, Candice’s new shoes arrived!)

We researched as much as we could on-line, but I think the best information came from two sites: Sleep Like the Dead and this guy’s web log, where he posted about buying a memory foam and received *a ton* of comments in response.
As a result of our reading, we decided we’d take a chance and go with the “foam”, too. Even though we were buying “blind”, we felt better knowing that Costco (which we just bought a membership at) has a great return policy and that so many other people were oh-so-happy.
So About That Bed Arrival?
Yeah! On Thursday the bed arrived. It was exciting. And about twelve hours after we unpacked it (it comes all folded up, and expands out when you open it from the package), we went to sleep on it. Here’s some pics of the unpacking of the bed:

The first night was… OK. I remember feeling really hot against the bed’s surface, and the “squish” of the bed (even those we got the more firm model) was unfamiliar. Plus, I’m used to being super cuddled up with Candice and since we now rest at slightly different levels (I’m 165 lbs. and she’s… uh, much less), cuddling up was a little trickier.
But when I woke up in the morning, even though I was uncertain about the bed – it felt so comfortable to be lying on it. I didn’t want to get out of bed. And that hasn’t changed in the days since we’ve gotten it. It’s nice to wake up and lie in bed or watch some TV on it.
The next night I remember not feeling the heat much, and the two nights since I haven’t noticed it at all. Also, on the old “bed”, I would usually wake up a few times and have trouble getting back to sleep. On the new bed, I’ve woken up a few times but I’m falling back to sleep almost immediately. Cuddling is getting easier as we adjust our poses, I think. And for those who really want to know, the negative comments regarding sex and foam beds are overrated. :p
All in all, I’m feeling more sold on the bed as time goes by. Here’s a pic of the bed with blankets on it (and a Duritz), but still no platform:

Friday
Friday, Candice and I went out to see the Gutter Twins with Mychelle and Tif. Mychelle actually got us in for free (we were “on the list”!) since she’s a journalist (link is to her site, and her review of the show). Cool stuff. The show was a lot of fun, even if standing outside in the cold for an hour or two or whatever before the show (without a jacket, yeah yeah) was not the best time. Actually, also not indicative of the best time would be our getting lost in Chicago trying to get home. But otherwise, yeah – great time. Haha.
Saturday
Saturday was Lisa’s actual birthday. We took her out to a middle eastern place to smoke a hookah (with watermelon tobacco) and eat awesome food. I ate a falafel pita and had some Turkish coffee. Oh, and we ate some great baklava, too! It was yum. Here’s some pics of Lisa smoking up.

Afterward, we headed home to wait for her man Jared to get off work, and then we went out to this tiny country pub in the middle of nowhere to play darts and get Lisa drunk. Hahaha. That was also a lot of fun.
The night ended with a trip home for a little more alcohol, a Ron White video, and then a 7am drive to drop Lisa off at work. Haha. :p Lucky her.
Sunday
Ah, the traditional day of rest. Actually, you can throw Monday in as well. We really haven’t done much but gravitate to the new bed. Haha. It’s pretty nice.
Usually when we (me, Candice, and Lisa) hang out at the house, we spend most of our time, lately anyway, playing Mario Party 8 on the Wii. It is so much fun, by the way. We’ve gone through a couple other party games (Rayman and Warioware) but, for me, thanks to the board game set-up, this title holds the most replay value. But Sunday I think we were all just beat and wanted to do nothing at all.
Oh, one other thing to report: my last vestige of Canadiana has given way to Indiana as I finalized my auto registration. Here’s my spiffy new Indiana plates:

- Damn, more pics of our house looking trashy. Oh well.
I have to say though, my outfit is dead sexy for sure.
- You forgot to mention that I WON my awesome new shoes!!!! They aren’t just any new shoes, they’re a MAJOR AWARD, dammit!!!!!
- I do have to give you credit for managing to take a picture that makes Bits look small somehow. He doesn’t look quite so small laying on the bed when you see it in person. And god knows if he was laying on the old bed, he’d be taking up the entire thing.
- We didn’t take Pisa to smoke a hookah. We took her to smoka-da-hookah. Get it right! Or better yet….TAKE IT BACK!!!!!!!!!!
1The search text “NovaForm® Grande Elegance™” is driving people to this post. Haha. In my WordPress dashboard it says that the aforementioned quoted text is one of the biggest search strings leading people here. So why not make a quick update? It’s now about 2 months later and we’re still happily using the bed.
It’s great for sitting on or lying on to watch TV or whatever. It nice to sleep on. But I almost always, prior to this bed, slept on my side, and occasionally on my back. With this bed that’s reversed. For some reason I find myself on my back most of the time. Maybe I’m getting sucked in and stuck? Haha. Who knows? Cuddling is still a little off, but it works. All in all, I’m happy with the bed. The ultimate test, of course, is to spend a week on a different bed to see how much I miss (or don’t) the NovaForm. That probably won’t happen until the summer.
Anyway, if anyone out there in cyber-land has questions about the mattress, feel free to fire away!
2Another update since people keep reading this post.
I love the bed. I’m 100 % sold on it. It took me a while to get to 100 %, but I’m there. We have sheets on it now so there is absolutely no overheating issue. It’s comfy. I do sleep on my back more, but my back feels great. My back goes out now and then, and it got a little worse when we first got the bed, but that’s so far in the past now. I wake up feeling great. I’ve adjusted.
I can’t imagine using another bed.
3I just want to say that we stayed at a hotel two nights ago – our first night not sleeping on our Novaform bed. And yeah, it was awful.
Last night, back on *our* bed, was wonderful.
