I Ate the Dandys’ Broccoli

May 31, 2007 By: bobisimo Category: All Posts, Catching Up, Entertainment, Late-Night Musings

Tonight was amazing.

My favorite band is the Dandy Warhols, and I got to see them play live tonight in Edmonton. We got there before doors opened and were at the front of the line. Unfortunately (and this was a real piss off at the time), the venue staff didn’t have the ticket list for will call ready! That meant that we had to stand at the ticket booth waiting for them to retrieve the list - while people with tickets poured in to the venue! Ugh!

Fortunately… most of those people were under age and, a reason why I love this club, underage kids aren’t allowed on the floor by the stage. Hotness! So I picked up a couple tee shirts and then we secured our spot at the stage.

The opening act was a band called the Upsidedown. They’re a bit of a stoner band like the Dandys, but maybe a little less winding and a little less happy.

(I moved the pics and everything broke. Check out this link to see the pics that this post references.)

I don’t know too much about them other than that their two girls in the band are super cute, and I had trouble focusing on anything other than their legs. At one point, the brunette yelled out that she thought our crowd was really hot. The feeling was reciprocal; we the crowd loved them. We yelled for them to play more and they yelled back that they were having too much fun.

They only played about a half hour, and then the crews came out to get the stage ready for the Dandys. First observation? They had the drum kit up at the front of the stage. And the back row was all equipment, meaning that the Dandys would have to play side-by-side at the front of the stage. Awesome! Especially awesome because I was front-and-center in the crowd - with my friends (left-to-right) Pam, Keltie, Alex, Homan -

as well as me (left), Dan (right) (and some random weirdo in the middle behind us):

And! They taped down the set list behind the front speaker equipment where we couldn’t see it, but… was it Pam? Someone came up with the brilliant idea of using my camera to zoom in on the set list. So I tried it and, voila!

pic02

I got the complete set list later on - though I’m attaching it here - but this was more than enough to get me even more excited for the show.

You probably can’t see it too well, but if you look at the full-sized version included in my photo gallery (two pages worth!), you can make it out pretty well.

I won’t go into detail about the show, but it was awesome. And I got a ton of pictures and even more video! I’ll attach a few here, but like I said there are more in the gallery (and a lot more on my computer):

Oddly, they didn’t do an encore - though they did do a fairly lengthy set, as you saw from the list: 20 tracks, each around 5 minutes or so… adding up to about the two hours that they played. And Zia did the cutest little song with no one else on stage as the outro (not the best pic of her, but here she is singing away - front and center):

As if all that wasn’t enough (which it totally was), a few other things happened to me that never happened before.

For one, I got a guitar pick! I never get guitar picks. It’s a nice black one with the Dandy logo on one side and the brand, Dunlop, on the other. I haven’t taken a pic of it yet but I suppose I should so I can add it to the album.

For another, Keltie and I got back stage. Yes, that’s slightly more exciting than getting a pick. And yes, I’m going to pause and let that one sink in a moment.

Still with me? After the show, everyone (including Alex, Pam and Dan, and Homan) took off. Keltie and I were walking to our cars when we passed the tour bus. A roadie was walking out from it and we asked if it was the Dandys’ bus and he said it was.

So we decided to wait for a while and see if they’d come out. A few minutes later, one of the guitarists from the Upsidedown popped out lugging some gear - while the blonde chickie from that band heckled him. We talked to them for a moment, telling them we really liked them and thought they were a great opener. They thanked us and went to the bus. A moment later, they popped out and asked us if we were waiting for the Dandys to come out. We said we were. So they said, well, why don’t you just go back stage.

:O *freaking out noises* :O

Yeah, so we did. Hahaha.

Talk about overwhelming. Walking into a little party room with both bands (one of whom is your favorite) and a few other groupies and fans was pretty intense. But I still managed to click some pictures:

While we were back stage, I ate some of the referenced-in-the-title broccoli. And… we got to see one of the girls (the brunette) from the Upsidedown pull Zia’s boob out (through a large tear in her shirt) and bite it. (Side note, Zia had a bra on until mid-way through the show when she decided to take it off… hot).

“Hanging out” with the Dandys was too cool! They’re so down to earth. It was fun listening to the Dandys talk about buying first houses, working with other bands through their Odditorium site (bands like the Black Angels and the Raveonettes - bands I know of only because of Candice), their favorites movies, their childhood celeb crushes - or even just their reaction to finding out that their Edmonton gig was scheduled at a mall (as well as all the things that they did at the mall today).

Best of all, of course, was getting our pics with the band! Here are the two McCabes, Zia and Bob:

And here is Courtney and Keltie:

pic38

Yeah. We were pretty happy! Hahaha. Oh, and Courtney even made me show him the pic I took to make sure it came out all right! He said he looked tired (I said he looked hot *blush*).

I could go on forever (and I’m so hyped up I may not be able to sleep tonight), but I think I’ll stop there. It was a fantastic show and the Dandys went from being my favorite band to something well beyond. I don’t even know. It’s crazy. And I’m happy.

*doing the happy “I met Courtney” dance* :D
Bob said it all…it was incredible and very surreal…

  2. Candice says:

I can’t say I’ve ever been excited about someone getting to eat broccoli before.

You’re the only person I know (and will ever know, i’m assuming) who could manage to fit broccoli into a story about getting backstage at a concert.
    I love you!

Wow, that was a fun story!
Cool hearing about that night via someone else’s experience other that my own.
Love the rock and eat your vegi’s good message.
    xo, Zia

The cynic in me disbelieves identities on the net and wonders how Master Bob’s spattering of words was found. Yet the rest of me wishes to “Oooh!” the fact that someone from the band may have slipped by for a moment.

And the cute one at that.

  6. bobisimo says:

Yeah… I would rather believe it is the real Zia than not.

    ;)

“Thank you for putting on an awesome show. I can’t wait to hear the new album. And please keep touring a lot. That was only my first Dandy show and I want to see at least a dozen more. You guys are that good.”

    :D
