Geek Alert…
I had this brief fantasy (fantasy?!) that I died. People were trying to figure out what to say about me at the funeral, and someone mentioned that I had a website. Everyone decided to read it to see who I was. And they looked and saw a column where I discussed being struck by food poisoning. And everyone got sick from reading and decided to go celebrate someone else’s funeral. So I think it’s time to get a new post up, even if I’m not exactly feeling like heaven right now.

So how’s this for a topic: does anyone care about the next generation of video game consoles? I used to be so into this stuff and now I really don’t even care. I mean, the last generation of new consoles… admittedly, I said that, too. And I ended up buying an Xbox about a month after they shipped (which was a serious exercise in patience). Then again, I didn’t have a gaming PC.
My best guess as to why I don’t care about the new consoles, now, is because of stuff like this. Read the article and you see disappointing comments about the PS3, the supposed big gun, like:
“At $500-$600…the wireless PS3 controller… [has a feature that is] not fully utilized in the first batch of games,” and, “Curiously missing, however, is the rumble feature found in the PS2 controller.” Also, “you’ll need a HDMI audio-video cable (not included)…”. Their big-hype launch title sounds like a Halo rip-off, and Blu-ray is miles away from mainstream. This is in addition to all the blunders that have been aired on websites like Slashdot over the course of the past months.
The Nintendo Wii sounds better, but it always comes down to the games. And most of the games I like are in the RPG genre (Grand Theft Auto, World of Warcraft, Neverwinter Nights 2) - and likely not on the Wii. I also enjoy football games, games like Prince of Persia, etc., but they’re also on every console. That leaves me with the Xbox and a line-up of games that play and look as well on my PC. Go figure. Apparently, I’ve switched from PC-to-Mac and Consoles-to-PC.
Now I just need to find a way to play Guitar Hero 2 on my PC. ![]()

PS How’s this for a weird joke, from Sports Illustrated’s Dr. Z:
Two old timers meet on a park bench in Fort Lauderdale. One of them says, “Ah, the stuff that’s going on these days … wars, famines, people dying. A person would be better off not having been born in the first place.”
The other one thinks it over. “Yeah,” he says, “but where do you find those?”
I want to get it, but I don’t think I do. At all. ![]()
